What is it like to work with a Parenting Coach?

What is it like to work with a Parenting Coach? | Jenn Abbatiello, Cycle Breaker Parenting Coach & Speaker

Raising kids can be tough, and when things get tough it's hard to know where to turn for help.

It's normal for parents to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. All the conflicting advice from friends, family, and experts can make it hard to know what to do.

A parent coach can help!

A parent coach works with you one-on-one to understand your parenting struggles and together work on solutions to help you achieve the family of your dreams.

It’s interesting when I tell people I’m a parent coach, they're like “what’s that?”.  You can hire coaches for your business to help you scale, there are weight loss coaches to scuba diving coaching to mindfulness coaches - it is one of the most effective ways to achieve your goals is to work with a trained coach who can support you.

Have you ever worked with a coach in any aspect of your life?

If you are nodding yes, then you know exactly how powerful the experience can be!

If you are nodding no, you may be struggling more than you have to.  If you are able to find a coach that understands what you are going through and the results you want to achieve, it can be the anchor you need to get there with less struggle.

As a certified parent coach, I have the training and experience necessary to help you connect with your kids and get them cooperating. With my help, you'll be able to create a more peaceful home environment for your whole family.

What is a Parenting Coach?

A parent coach can help you become the parent you want to be!

You might wonder how is it different than therapy?  Coaching is a relationship between equals. A coach can help guide and mentor you to become the parent you want to be. Coaches are usually not doctors.  The relationship tends to be more personal, stories are shared and at times insights from their own experience that parents may find helpful.  A coach's role is to provide you with support, strategies, tools and encouragement as you begin to implement new strategies and techniques in your home.  You are the expert on your child.  It is a collaboration as a team to find the solutions that work for you and your family.

Counselling/therapy is a relationship based on overcoming obstacles due to a mental health disorder, such as anxiety or depression.  The counsellor/therapist is the professional and is expected to guide you to a deeper understanding and management of your mental health concerns.

If you or a family member are in crisis, coaching is not the right solution for you.  You should seek experienced medical or psychological support.  If you are currently working with a counsellor/therapist, it can be helpful to work with a coach simultaneously.

Coaching is solution-oriented.  The goal is to provide practical, actionable tools to create a meaningful connection with your child(ren).  Think of counselling as looking back and coaching looking forward.

Coaching does have one thing in common with counselling/therapy: all conversations are strictly confidential.

How can a Parenting Coach help?

A Parent Coach can help:

  • Identify challenges and areas of conflict within your family.

  • Support you to create the change you want to see in your family.

  • Provide strategy and tools that you can apply right away to build connection and cooperation with your child.

Do I need a Parenting Coach?

Can’t I just Google answers to my latest parenting struggle or read parenting books, listen to podcasts or join a Facebook Group?

All those things can be helpful but if you find yourself still struggling it may be worth having a call with a parenting coach to see if they can help.  Most offer complimentary discovery calls to learn more and see if it is a good fit.

If you tried all of those things but are still feeling stuck and not sure what to do differently a parenting coach can provide a different perspective.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, then it might be worth speaking with a parenting coach:

  • Questioning your parenting approach

  • Unsure of what to do differently

  • Overwhelmed by everyday parenting challenges

  • Feeling like yelling is the only way to get your kids attention

  • Arguing with a co-parent about how to raise your children

  • Consequences and punishments are all that work but don’t feel good and kids keep misbehaving

  • Difficulty understanding and navigating rebellious or deviate children

  • Tired and frustrated

What is it like to work with a Private Parenting Coach?

Each parent coach has different services and packages they offer to their clients.  Some offer individual sessions, others are 3 months or 6 months or customized based on your needs.

In my experience, working with a parent weekly over a 3 month period gets the maximum results.  During our time together, parents I work with are challenged to think differently and shift their perspective.  They leave each session with some homework and a tool to practice.

As a Parenting Coach, it is my responsibility to support my clients to shift limiting beliefs and troubleshoot if a tool they practiced didn’t work as expected.

Working with a Parenting Coach will help you feel more confident in your parenting with less guilt, overwhelm and frustration.

How does Parent Coaching work?

My program begins with a Roadmap form and a one hour Bonus call where we dig into what exactly is going on in your parenting, we set a benchmark for where you are at, we review your goals and vision for yourself and your family.  It is the roadmap for the work we will do together over the course of 90 days.

Some of the topics on the Roadmap include:

What are your goals/intentions for yourself within your parenting, with your relationship with your child?  We look at your personal values and qualities you would like to see in your kids when they are adults.  What are your default parenting patterns? Etc…

After the first session, the weekly homework begins. Where we work through the process below:

How can you find the right Parenting Coach?

When you’re looking for a Parenting Coach, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you’ll be working very closely with this person for many months, so it is important to find a coach that you feel comfortable talking to about various parenting issues.  An open and honest relationship is essential in order to reach your goals.

Most Parenting Coaches will offer a Free Discovery Call so that you can speak with them and ask questions and see if there is a good fit and connection between you.

How much does a Parenting Coach cost?

Coaching is an unregulated industry and therefore coaches set their own prices.  On average you can expect to pay $100/hour but fees vary greatly depending on the coach and the area they live in.

Do you need to work with someone in a similar location to you?  Perhaps if available you’d like to do a face-to-face meeting.  Or you would like evening or weekend appointments that some coaches can’t accommodate.
